First held in 2009, the GGJ is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest game development hackathon, where teams of game development professionals, amateurs, and students endeavor to produce a similarly-themed game in under two days (48 hours). The 2020 hackathon saw a record-breaking 48,753 people participating in 934 venues in 118 countries and regions around the world, with 9,601 games created. At the 2021 event, which was held online, more than 6,000 games were created in 585 locations in 104 countries and regions around the world. Last year the event shifted online and similarly this year it will be conducted using the Discord and Zoom platforms. Participation is free of charge and registration will be accepted until January 27.
